In a world that is constantly changing and modernizing, there are places that have been forgotten and abandoned – lost places. These mysterious and often derelict locations tell stories of times gone by, if only you are prepared to listen. But how do you even find these places? An exciting question, especially for beginners, which we will get to the bottom of today.
Abandoned places, full of stories of times gone by, are often closer than you think. But how do you find these fascinating lost places? The search turns out to be easier than expected, as there are various ways to track down the forgotten treasures.
The quickest method is to search online and look for permanently closed buildings or simply get into the habit of keeping a watchful eye while driving.
Many beginners always come across the Urbex-Elite map (a public map that contains many Lost Places ), especially at the beginning. This can indeed be very helpful for beginners, but can also quickly become demotivating, as many places on this map are either no longer abandoned or are absolute ruins. In the worst case, the building has even been demolished.
However, if you are just starting out and are not yet looking for a thrill, you can definitely fall back on this card. It is a good first point of reference for getting started with this hobby. But there are better alternatives.
But it’s not just the Internet that holds treasures – you can also find them in your own private environment. Ask friends or acquaintances about their experiences or whether they have already discovered abandoned places in their city. There are often personal stories and insider knowledge hidden behind the scenes that come to light in a city, whether consciously or unconsciously.
If there’s one thing that counts in the Lost Place scene, it’s that you need good contacts. The exchange of coordinates is also part of this. However, if you want others to entrust you with coordinates, you should be trustworthy and not immediately post these locations publicly on the Internet for everyone to see.
Over time, you will certainly build up close contacts with whom you will swap regularly. Because you can’t keep an eye on the whole of Germany or even Europe if you’re going on tour further afield. That’s why you should definitely network with others.
We have already found the best places this way, most of which are even free of vandalism. The dream of every Urbexer.
Of course, technological progress has not bypassed the lost place scene. There are now more and more developers who are creating an app for such adventures.
There are already dozens of apps in the App Store, some of which are free, but some of which are chargeable. While some are no longer being worked on at all, there are others that are constantly being developed further.
We are proud to say that we belong to this group. On lostio.app you will find a huge database of abandoned places, which are also often free from vandalism.
Why is that? We have a paywall and lostio is not free. Believe me when I tell you that this is an advantage in this scene. Places on public maps are often directly overrun or, in the worst case, destroyed by vandals or looted by cable thieves. A terrible thing, but one that cannot be prevented.
Since our premium service (full access to our complete database & search engine) costs €4.99 per month, the places are often still very untouched and we are happy about that. Here we have clearly made the right decision not to make our service completely free of charge.
Before you explore lost places, please note the legal situation. Entering private property without permission is illegal. Therefore, check the accessibility of the location in advance and clarify whether you need the owner’s permission.
Take care not to remove any objects or damage any buildings during your visit. This is not only illegal, but also disrespectful to the history of the place.
Photographing lost places may infringe copyrights. Therefore, be careful when distributing photos to avoid legal problems.
Comply with the laws and regulations so that you don’t get into trouble and future visitors can continue to enter the site. Respect the rules to make exploring abandoned places safe and responsible.
But there are also many gray areas in this scene. However, we do not wish to and may not give legal advice here.
I hope the tips have helped you and you’ve got a better feel for how to find abandoned places yourself. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at any time or, as already mentioned, join our great community.
You’ll kill a few birds with one stone: you’ll quickly find untouched and deserted places in your area and, thanks to our WhatsApp group, you’ll also have good contacts to talk to.
Of course, our subscription can be daunting at first, but you’ll soon realize that you can even save money with lostio, as you simply spend less time driving around. What’s more, you can even earn money with your hobby in lostio. Be sure to take a look. We promise you that it will be worth it!
